Klein Schietveld

The Klein Schietveld owes its name to the nearby military domain in Brasschaat. The domain forms a green lung of woods and heathland in the south of Kalmthout. The Klein Schietveld of Kalmthout and Brasschaat forms, together with the Groot Schietveld of Brecht, a beautiful nature reserve of no less than 900 hectares. Access is only possible via the western entrance in the Klein Schietveld, where you can discover various hiking trails. Or you can go hiking using the hiking nodes.

Dennendael path

From Heide station you can discover the green area where Willy Vandersteen lived and drew. You pass the Mission House, the church once served the newly established parish of Heide. In 1937, a Lourdes Grotto was built on the left. This has now been completely renovated, wonderful for taking a break while walking. You walk through part of the Klein Schietveld and also along the 'Sjaeneven'. When white sand was still used to cover the floors of inns and farms with sand, sand washers could regularly be seen at work here. The fen water also served as drinking water for livestock and surrounding farms.
